Small yards are tricky. Every square foot counts, and if the space isn't planned out well, it ends up feeling cramped and underused. That was exactly the situation here - a compact townhome backyard that needed a smart layout to actually work for the homeowner.

What we built is a large-format paver patio with a dark charcoal border running the perimeter. That border detail is doing a lot of work - it grounds the whole design and gives it a clean, finished look without overcomplicating things. The patio flows right up to an existing concrete pad next to the back door, which we designated as the future hot tub spot. Two usable zones, one cohesive design.

The rest of the yard keeps it simple. River rock fills the open areas around the patio, which cuts down on maintenance and keeps the overall look sharp year-round. A curved mulch bed wraps around the tree on the left side, which softens the hardscape and ties the landscaping together. Nothing overly fussy - just clean lines that hold up well over time.

This kind of project is a good example of how working with the constraints of a small space, rather than fighting them, gets you the best result. The patio is sized generously enough to actually use, the hot tub pad is ready to go when the homeowner is, and the landscaping around it all keeps things low maintenance. That's the goal every time.
